My Mum, Susie

Soul mates come in all shapes and sizes. They come and go throughout our lives, teaching us, nourishing us and challenging us. Today is the birthday of one of my soul mates; My Mum, Susie.

The chances are, if you’re reading this blog: you probably know Susie. She’s a big feature on my Instagram and was once spotted out walking the dogs on Broadway Market by someone who follows me on Instagram; a.k.a she’s officially more famous than I am.

With her being a big feature on my social media, it’s been very easy for people to gather an understand of her nature. Funny, playful, spontaneous.. and the perfect performer. Oh yes, there are days where my mum is certainly not camera ready.

I have learnt to love my mum for all the things that she is not, alongside all of the things that she is.

kind

My mum is one of the kindest people I have ever known. She is spontaneously thoughtful and will often get you little gifts and hide them in your bed because she thinks “it will make you smile”.

Thoughtful and selfless

My mum works alongside my Dad running a charity for homelessness which they have run for nearly 40 years. She spends her days breaking up fights, cleaning and clothing homeless people, giving support to women working in the sex industry, and comes home in time to cook and clean our home. With the little time she has left over, she still finds time to volunteer for the NHS. Despite reminding me how draining it can be, she has never turned her back on the responsibilities that she has taken on.

Confident

I used to be embarrassed by how confident my Mum is, but actually I think it was because I was jealous that I wasn’t able to do the things she could. She knows exactly who she is and has the ability to talk to whoever she wants, do whatever she wants to do, and be however she wants to be.

HONEST

My mum is outrageously honest. If you’ve put on weight, she’ll tell you. If you’ve gotten older, she’ll remind you. When she’s really proud of you, she’ll be the first to tell you.

POSITIVE

My mum never complains. In fact, she’s insanely happy all of the time to an annoying degree, and it’s incredibly infectious.

intuitive

My mum can sense a bad soul or a negative energy. She’ll turn to me and say “I don’t like your friend _______, they don’t have your best interest at heart.” She has never been wrong.

SUPPORTIVE

My mum, alongside my dad are the most supportive parents; which I am eternally grateful for. They have seen me change my career plans a million times, make crazy life decisions they don’t understand and date far too many unkind men than needed, and yet I always hear “whatever you decide to do, we will support your decision.” Talk about being blessed.

Best mate

My mum is my ultimate best mate. There is very little we are not able to talk about; sex, periods, money, jobs, boys, girls. The lot. Very few people would go on holiday with their parents, but mine are the best to travel with.

Our relationship has not always been smooth. Despite my mum being my best friend for my adult life, there were lots of clashes during my child and teenage hood. For a long time it seemed like we didn’t really understand what kind of relationship we had, and we didn’t know how our personalities coexist. There were many times where we demanded a lot from each other and were not prepared to give very much back. In many ways we were too opposite to have a functional relationship and in many ways we were far too similar.

I spent many years gravitating towards a relationship with my dad which felt much easier. My mum often felt like a totally different type of human with a different way of thinking; where I felt like my dad and I had a deep understanding of each other, both good and bad.

My mum was not perfect, and it made me angry. I wanted a super mum.

A big part of our healing and relationship growth has developed by letting go of our expectations of each other, and allowing each other to be our true selves without judgement.

I have learnt to love my mum for all the things that she is not, alongside all of the things that she is.

So today I wanted to share all of the amazing qualities about my mum that are not so apparent upon first glance.
