What I wore: New York City
1 large suitcase, 1 carry on and a backpack = 5 days in New York City. That’s not bad right? Despite what my parents said, I think I packed very cleverly, and the 2 bags was weight distribution anyway. This was the first ever trip where I planned what I was going to wear each day – and it mostly worked! I think I swapped around one of the night time outfits.. but otherwise I stuck to it. Of course I had to keep my eye on my weather app like a hawk, otherwise I woulda been buying jumpers in NY like there’s no tomorrow.
DAY 1 - travel
The first day – the day of travelling. I wanted something casual, and comfortable. They also say you should wear what would take up the most room in the bag. Luckily I had a big suitcase, a carry on and a backpack, so lots of space.
But I also have a bad habit of travelling in what basically are.. pyjamas. So I thought; nah better look like an actual human. It’s why I love these trousers from Zara – they look super smart; but they are so comfortable that sleep is definitely an option in them.
In fact; this is a very Zara heavy outfit indeed, as my white t-shirt and trench are also both from Zara. Can’t go wrong with a trench coat over the top of a simple white t-shirt in my opinion.
I feel like this outfit is my epitome of smart-casj. Yanno? Smart trousers, casj top. Smart coat… casj shoes. You can never go wrong with vans either – they’ll be in the coffin let’s be honest.
NIGHT 1 - rooftop drinks
On the first day we were so bloody shattered; changing was not an option. It was a quick freshen up and off to the roof top bar for drinks. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not the best fashion choice of my life – but throw on a pair of stiletto court shoes and you have yourself a day to night outfit there. Run and tell guys.
I only took one pair of sunglasses to NYC, and I actually bought them from the airport on the way there hey!
They are a pair of brown tortoise shell cat-eye style sunnies, a classic for the current spring/summer season, and I practically never took them off.
I mostly wear sunglasses (even at night) so I can stare at people and they don’t realise. Don’t judge me.
DAY 2 - lunches, brunches and helicopter rides
This is an outfit I had bought recently – in NYC I was just… giving it a spin?
I wasn’t sure about it at first because it seemed like flimsy outfit – one for either flashing a tit or a bit too much leg; but I ended up taking a helicopter ride in it! I love these 2 colours together, I feel like mustard has been super popular for SS18 anyway, and the pastel blue is a classic (although I do feel like I have been cheating on pink of course).
The top is Bershka, one of my current favourite cheap and cheerful tops, and the skirt I found on Asos. I find the a-line midi skirt range very flattering for my body type rather than pencil skirt which shows off e v e r y lump and bump. I mean, I do like the lumps and bumps usually but the midi skirt was so comfortable and gave a good breeeeze on this gorgeous sunny day. Midi skirts are also a nice of way looking conservative but also looking like hotshit on toast when paired with a cute lil’ crop top.
I wanted to wear my new gorgeous shoes on this day, but unfortunately you will be seeing a lot of my vans – which were the only shoes my blister-filled feet could accept (thanks andotherstories).
night 2 - coyote ugly
So this was the night of my actual birthday. I was told to get dressed up “the sluttier the better” to fit the surprise theme of the night (ominous I know). I wouldn’t say my outfit was slutty; I mean I’ve definitely been to Sainsbury’s in this particular combo before – but it was all I had. I was told that the fishnets and leopard print was appropriate! As the cab pulled up, I saw the surprise = the coyote ugly bar.
Right now I’m really into clashing colours, so the warm tones in the leopard print clashing with the cool blue faux leather really interests me, and then to add in some fishnets for other clashes of material.
The leopard print body suit is from pretty little thing, a black denim skirt from topshop to keep it casual, and the most comfortable boots from my wardrobe; my vagabonds. The blue faux leather jacket is from Bershka and comes in soooo many colours.
DAY 3 - market strolls and shopping
My day usually begins with spending 3 hours deciding what to wear, and then finally settling on a crisp classic shirt. I have about 6 shirts at home but nothing stops me from going into a shop, seeing a crisp, smart or casual shirt and thinking “I’ve got to have that, it’s a classic.”
What a justification.
I got this gorgeous nude one from Urban Outfitters, which has a very smooth and soft feel. It’s quite a casual fit with a loose material so a perfect one to drape over the shoulders, or tie around the waist.
I love this look layered with loads of jewellery and necklaces, to find balance between casual and super bloody glam. Here it’s paired with a denim skirt from H&M, and surprise surprise; my vans. To be totally fair to myself – they do go with fucking everything. I’d say invest in a pair of old skools, my friends.
NIGHT 3 - burlesque club and speakeasy cocktails
I think that was my favourite outfit so far. I had woken up to a gorgeous present from Bronagh, which was a gold body chain from rocknrose – one that I had up in my chrome favourites for the best part of 6 months. In my opinion, this is another outfit mixing the casual with the super glam.
It’s quite a casual black cami crop top from bershka, with a checkered H&M skirt. Could be totally day to day, but then it’s super glammed up with the fitted pink blazer (my absolute wardrobe fave). On my feet I’m wearing black platform wedges (which are my most comfortable heels contrary to how they look) and I am carrying my first ever designer handbag – the mulberry alexa.
The alexa is another classic which goes with absolutely everything – it’s why I chose it (let’s be real, I have to recycle and rewear the designer stuff) – and of course I got it with gold hardware to match my every day jewellery.
I wore this outfit to a burlesque show, so I felt well within my right to look as glam as physically possible, and yes; I did wear my sunglasses inside.
Gotta be elusive ain’t ya.
DAY 4 - brooklyn baby
the shirt obsession continues
Another good example of my shirt obsession.
This time it’s white, cotton, and very long. This shirt dress is from Monki, at an absolute bargain price.
I wanted to keep this outfit super casual and classic, but the shirt dress did lose it’s shape a little in my suitcase so I used the belt from my trench to take it in a little in the waist. I also use the shirt buttons to take the dress up my leg a little, otherwise I fear I would look like a giant cloud.
And of course, wearing my favourite and most classic trench coat from Zara. I don’t think I’ve taken it off since I got it… and I probably won’t. Best kept draped over the shoulders.
NIGHT 4 - top of the rock
Our last night in NYC… super sad. And also; probably a little over dressed. The location? Top of the rock… so there’s me thinking it’s gonna be like the shard or the sky garden where everyone gets super dressed up. But nah, we were kinda the only ones.
Never mind – we looked sick.
I didn’t plan to go full-on suit anyway, I wanted to go for the black lace body with the pink trousers and a cardigan, but it started to rain and I needed a blazer I could romantically throw over my head as I did a little run from the taxi to the Rockefeller center. So the full-on bubblegum pink suit came out. It’s from Bershka, and I had to go in and buy it the first day it was in the window. How sad am I? Not a regret though. The lace body (which I borrowed from Bronagh) gave me a chance to show off my new body chain.
I popped on my western-style belt from urban outfitters to hold up my too big trousers. Does anyone else have that issue? Where you need to buy trousers big enough to fit over your arse but then they’re too roomy for the waist. Belt’s are a necessary for me rather than a fashion statement – but I’d rather be wearing a Gucci one so if anyone feels generous please slide into my DM’s. Thanks.
The mulberry alexa popped out again, for I couldn’t fit too many different bags into my case so I had to take my one-size-fits-all type bag, and the same black platforms.
Phew! SO much typing. This trip really taught me how to outfit repeat but make it look like you’re wearing something totally unique. At least – that’s how I hope I looked!
DAY 5 - mooching, zoo-ing, and coming home
The day to travel home – maybe that’s why I look so moody in these photos!
A gorgeous blue zipped up crop top from Bershka. Be careful, the zip really does work… whoops. A new casual slouchy cardigan from Pull & Bear. It’s quite light weight so it’s awesome to just throw on and fits under most coats if you need to layer up. My favourite zara skinny jeans held up by the same urban outfitters belt. The same old skool vans, beaten to a little bit of a pulp by this point.
But altogether, super comfortable and all absolute classics.
–
And that is the end.
I hope you guys enjoyed reading what I put on the old skeleton whilst I was away, and please stay tuned next week which will be a much more lengthy and exciting post all about new york, what we did, where we went, and what we would have changed!
